Facebook Inc. has agreed to pay $1.9 billion to acquire WhatsApp, the world’s largest messaging app, for $19 billion in cash.
The deal is subject to regulatory approval.
The news comes on the heels of the approval of a $1 billion purchase of Snapchat Inc. in March.
Facebook also announced plans to buy Instagram Inc. for $1 trillion, which is subject of the same regulatory approval process.

The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the year.
Facebook said the deal is part of a broader strategy to build a better Facebook Messenger experience and a stronger Messenger team.
Facebook will be the parent company of WhatsApp, which makes messaging apps, and the social network is based in Germany.
WhatsApp is popular in Europe, where WhatsApp users are more likely to use the platform than other regions.
WhatsApp announced in January that it would expand to Latin America and Africa, adding that the acquisition will add billions of messages per day.
Facebook Messenger is the default app for the majority of people on Facebook, including Messenger users.
The app is available on Apple Inc.’s mobile platform, iOS, Android and Windows phones and tablets.
Facebook’s purchase of WhatsApp is expected add to a billion people using Facebook Messenger.
Facebook’s acquisition of WhatsApp will bring more than 1 billion messages to Facebook users every day, the company said in a blog post.
The purchase is expected “to create a strong messaging platform that will serve users better in their daily lives, while also increasing the privacy and security of our users’ information,” Facebook said.
Facebook plans to use WhatsApp to send text messages and video chats with friends, and to send photos, video clips, audio clips and other content that is not available through the app, Facebook said in the blog post about the acquisition.
WhatsApp also announced a $500 million fund to help WhatsApp employees, its founders and employees, and other users affected by the acquisition, the social networking company said.
In March, Facebook announced a partnership with Snapchat to buy the company for $3 billion.
The two companies are now working to finalize the transaction, which Facebook said would close in 2018.
As part of the deal, WhatsApp would give WhatsApp employees access to new tools, including a new Messenger app, which WhatsApp said it was “fully committed to delivering.”
WhatsApp also will continue to provide video chats, the Facebook blog post said.
WhatsApp will continue its commitment to its users by continuing to provide the best possible user experience and to support WhatsApp’s work on the Messenger app in the future, Facebook added.
Messenger has grown to more than 6.3 billion monthly active users.
Facebook recently added a new feature to its Messenger app called the “Instant Messenger,” which allows users to create a personal account and send an instant message or video message to anyone they want.
The app has more than 200 million active users, according to Facebook.
Like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger also has more users on Android, iOS and Windows Phone, and has more apps available on those platforms than Facebook’s own apps.
WhatsApp said its user base has grown over the last few years, and that it has more customers on iOS than Facebook Messenger does.
WhatsApp has about 20 million active members, and Facebook Messenger has around 10 million.
WhatsApp said its users have also increased its overall user base to about 50 million people in the last six months.
